2005 Standard Chartered Marathon

I've completed it!! ... with a big smile on my face. :D

Till now, i still cant believe that i've completed the race.... 42km is definitely a daunting figure. After weeks of preparation, i'm so glad that it is finally over.

My first std chart run was 2 years ago when i joined the half marathon race. It was a very good run that time... 2hr 7min, my personal best in a 1/2 marathon race. After that year, i went ahead and took part in the full marathon race. I wouldn't say it was a mistake to join that time, afterall, it was my first 42km and that time, i didn't have the time to train for it as i was busy with exams and fyp. After the 24km, both my legs were gone and i had to run/walk to complete the rest of the race..... timing was 5hr 56min.

To prevent history from happening, this year i jio-ed Ang to train at east coast for the race. We started out in late sept, clocking 1.5 hrs on our 1st run and gradually increase to 28km on our final run, 3 weeks before the race. During the training phase, i was introduced to the importance of having isotonic drinks and to keep oneself hydrated during the run. Hence, i got myself a fuel belt as well as recovery drink packs. Ang also gave me his polar watch (he got a much better one =D) so that i can monitor my heart rate. Went on a full-week carbo-loading... i swear i never ate so much bread in a week before!! Kept chiong loaves of bread... finished up all the rice on my plate...

Well, despite being more prepared this yr, i still have my worries.... i wonder if i can keep on running.... i heard many stories of legs cramming... the horrid feeling of pain in the calves and knees. Furthermore, my knees were in terrible pain the week before the race....need to resort to pasting medicated plasters on my knees.... Yestered i plastered 3 on each knee. :D

Finally comes the big day! Yesterday went for a mini shopping spree....bought the spray for relieving muscle aches, more plasters for my injured knees as well as more bread for carbo-loading, and a bottle of gatorade to be consumbed before the race. Slept at 9pm because we need to wake up at 3+am! Blardy early.... anyways, thanks to Cleve for the ride to the race destination! Saw a few friends before race started and we wished each other good luck before the race flags off.

Race time: During the first 5km, i was fighting with a terrible tummyach and an impending diarrhoea. My initial thought is to endure till the end of the race before rushing to the toilet...that will be...many hrs later? Anyway... after the 6th km, my tummyach got worse and i had to rush to the toilet. Luckily they had those mobile toilets along the way and juz when i wanted one, i appeared infront of me!.... but there were 4 guys infront of me... luckily they let me in first because i was bending halfway in pain. Hee hee.

When i got out, there wasnt many marathon runners on the road. Panick. Am i lagging behind? Mai tu liao, i quickly quicken my pace and ran faster...my heart race kept increasing to 168-169... the first 21km is still okie...slow run.... the moment i hit east coast, i feel quite comfortable... cos it is the place which i ran every weekend with Ang and Cleve. I took out my powergel and started to eat abit of it with a few small gulps of water. I repeated it for every km. Seriously, i think it works! Though my heart rate was above 170, i could still maintain my pace and keep going.

And so, i juz kept running and running...when i got out of east coast, i have completed 35km. 7km to go! Along the way i met kelvin, Ang's running buddy.... passed him the muscle spray because he was walking away. After a while, he caught up and returned me the spray, but he continued to walk as he said his heart is painful (?). Continued to keep running.... and running.... kept looking up at the sky to keep myself focus. Kept telling myself... "keep going, dun walk, keep running...it's ending real soon..."

Saw Ang after the 38km mark... he was walking due to cramps on his calves. Decided to leave him there as i wanted badly to finish the race once and for all. The last 2km is really a KILLER.... it's like...so near yet so far!! The worst thing is that everyone around me is WALKING.... it's damn blardy tempting to follow suit...

Finally, the last 100m dash is really adrenaline rush. The feeling of running pass the finishing line is a great satisfaction. :D

My best timing ever.... 5hr 15min. Yay!!

The running club: Guobin, Cleve, Jean, Kelvin, Ang and ME!

Best foot forward! Note: Guobin's thighs are damn funnie

Jingzhong and me! My best running buddy!

Ang and me :D

Beary bear

Ang knows I was feeling down and upset... and hence, he bought me a carebear to cheer me up!! Hehe....actually, i requested him to buy for me. We spent the peaceful sunday morning eating big breakfast and Macs before proceeding to the toys store to get this Funshine Bear....

It is a very cuddly and cutey bear (sounds so girlish)....it got rabbit ears as this is the Easter collection. I really like the smiley sun on carebear's tummy... it makes me feel so happy each time i see it! :D

Sunday was really well spent... Nopes, we did not go East Coast for our long run. Instead, we went World of Sports for SHOPPING because there was 40% storewide sale for UOB card holders! YAY!!! I bought a Columbia pouch as well as a Teva slipper.... Ang also bought one pair too. Discounts make me smile non stop. Heehehehe....

Anyway, we did went for our long run.... but we went on Sat instead. Thanks to Cleve and his wonderful car.... without him, we wont be able to put our stuffs and run with ease without worrying for the time as those blardy East Coast lockers close at 7pm.... and Ang has a running companion to keep him going. As for me.... I'm so used to running alone!! Motivation has long left me... haha..... We finally did our longest run! We peaked before the Big thing comes on 4th dec.... Can I do it? Will i have the strength and will power to finish the entire 42km without walking?? Can I Do It??

We already made plans on what we'll do after the marathon.... Firstly, we will not run anymore... at least for the next 1 month. Maybe we'll pick up blading.... and yes, we'll be heading to our fave East Coast again... haha... I wanna brush up on my tennis too.... wanna play with those "piak piak" sounds and try to minimize the number of balls flying out of the courts....

Big Day is only 3 weeks away! Come Come!!

Tennis in NTU

It was a pretty long time since i step foot into ntu. Since it's Deepavali (Happy holidays!) today, Ang and i decided to play tennis.... the best place to play is the free and easy ntu! Haha...actually we played at nie court. :D

Wanted to have macdonald for lunch initially, but !@#$?? it closes down on public holidays. Sigh...in the end, we walked a big detour and went to canteen 2 for lunch.... !@#$??? So many ppl there...!! ... it felt as if the entire mugging student population was there to satisfy their hungry pangs.

We took a peaceful walk to nie, admiring the trees and peace around us. Since it's public holidays and exam period, the school was practically ppl-less. Haha... the courts (4 in total) were also empty! Haha....

It has been a long time since we last played tennis. Hence today's performance weren't that good... keep missing the ball or hitting it too hard that it flew OUT of the court... Haix.... alot of time was spent picking the balls in and out of the court. *pengz*

But it was really a very good day.... spending a quiet and peaceful time in ntu with Ang. So lovely. Hee hee.

Running at east coast this thursday... YAY!! (Dun u juz love public holidays....damn precious)

Good run!

Sunny sunday at east coast.... Getting ready for our weekly long distance run.

I was so so determined to complete the 2 long loops i set for myself.

   And i did it! YAY!!

28 km... in 3hr 5min... not easy...especially when i started out in bright sunny weather to cold dark evening.... not easy when there wasn't anyone around me for encouragement... not easy when my legs were aching and i was still a distance away from the destination.

   But i did it!! YAY!!

I really love yesterday's run.... because i know my legs still can carry me comfortably for another 30min...may need to eat a power gel to give me extra energy. Realise the key thing in running is to keep the body hydrated at all times. Once i feel slightly thirsty, fatigue comes quickly. Another thing is to try to lift the knees higher to relieve some pain on the calves and knee joints.

After the long run, it's good to massage those areas that are giving pain and aches. I kept massasing my calve muscles and knees.... although yesterday was an agony, today i woke up without feeling any soreness on my thighs and calves... except for a little joint pains on the knees. HAPPY. Haha... :D

Hope to complete a 3.5 hr run to see how much i can push myself.... somehow i'm looking forward to this saturday's run! Wohoo! Think we gotto start early.... dun really like the feeling of seeing the sunset to complete darkness during the run... it gives me a very gloomy and pessimistic feeling...aww....

Tml is TENNIS DAY!! YAY!! :D

Tired

Back from my long run at East Coast today.

Managed to clocked only 2hr 17min.

   Very tired!!

   Not motivated at all.... How?

   Marathon coming... in about 5 weeks time? 5 x 7 = .....35 DAYS!!!

Supposed to have a 2.5hr run.... but somemore, my mind shuts off by itself and my feet are painful.

1st hour of run was very enjoyable.... running pretty fast (lacking by only 100+m away from Ang...wahaha), but HR was pretty high...around 167-174....After completing my usual long route (1hr 35min), my mind automatically tells me "Hey! You've completed the route already..time to stop..)....

... But i cannot stop! I need to run another hour more....

And so i ran....ran and ran.... i dunno why...there were so many people walking slowly infront of me... had to ran in a zig-zag manner constantly for the next 37min. Pretty tiring....haha....

Hai...kinda dread the coming long run.... =/

Love Ang !

Had a good run this evening with the polar watch Ang gave me... my virgin run with a polar. Hee...it's really good to be able to monitor my heart rate during the run... able to know when to speed up....when to slow down...good ah! Managed to improve my timing by 2 min...small improvement, but i'm happie with it =D

4 more days to seeing Ang!!!!!!

Crazy rain

I got a new Polar watch too! Haha.... actually it's not new. It used to be Ang's watch (his sis won it in a lucky draw) and since he got a better one, he gave it to me!

Polar FS3c....Dark grey colour....

The reason why he wanna change to a better watch is because... he thought this cheaper model can only show the heart rate during exercising and can't show the timing... well... actually it can. We only realize it after he brought the entire box (watch, manuals, warranty card) to my house and i read it from the manual. Haha... so it means that after using the watch for so long in his runs, he can only know how long he ran after the end of his run... =D

Saturday was an agony. I spent the entire morning and afternoon waiting for Ang to finish his work in the office before meeting him in town for a sub-standard japanese dinner. Went home feeling tired, perhaps due to the excessive nua-ing at home before that. Ang continued to work on his laptop while i watched a very interesting documentary on ChannelNewsAsia.

Sunday was the worst ever. It RAINED the whole day... totally ruined my plans to run at East Coast. Sigh...it was really a very sad day as i thought i could continue with my long run....plan to do a 2.5 hrs run. Guess i could only do it next weekend *cringe* Spent the entire entire day NUA-ING at home.... did a silly though - Ang and i brave the stormy weather out for lunch... it was pretty crazy as the run was literally pouring down in huge amounts. Even our big and sturdy umbrellas couldn't take it... i was totally drenched from waist down as a bus zoomed past me and this huge puddle of water came splashing down on me... blah!! Ang got a shocked while i was laughing away... wahaha. I think walking in a big big rain was pretty fun!! He was saying the umbrella was not tahan-able and rain water seems to be seeping through it.... his hair was more wet than his legs. Heh heh so funny :D

Feeling damn guilty sia. No run for today... at alot of KFC for dinner. Sigh. Spare tyre getting bigger sia.

Polar watch

Burnt a deep hole in my pocket after buying this watch for Ang....

Polar RS200sd

It's not cheap at all sia (can never understand what's the lure with such gadgets). But since he really likes it, i gave it to him as advance Xmas present! Yippie! I hope he likes it. =D

And the camcorder i won in the draw. Heh heh heh.
